Le nouveau guide suprême iranien est vivant mais « affaibli » — Trump
US President Donald Trump has stated that he believes Iran's new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, is alive but "weakened".
Khamenei, whose father Ali Khamenei was killed on the first day of the war launched by the United States and Israel against Iran, has not been seen in public since his appointment by a clerical assembly on Sunday.
His first public statements were made by a television presenter on Thursday.
"I think he's probably alive. I think he's weakened, but I think he's probably alive in some form or another," Trump said during an interview on Fox News' The Brian Kilmeade Show.
In his first statements since assuming the post of supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei vowed to maintain the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and urged neighboring countries to close US military bases located on their territory, under penalty of being targeted by Iran.
The United States and Israel launched attacks against Iran on February 28, with Tehran retaliating with strikes against Israel and Gulf countries hosting US bases.
As the conflict approaches its second week, after killing thousands and shaking global financial markets, the leaders of Iran, Israel and the United States have all expressed defiance and vowed to continue the fight.
