Le pape regrette que ses discours en Afrique soient interprétés comme un débat avec Trump
In the midst of his African tour, Pope Leo XIV expressed regret on Saturday that his speeches there were being interpreted as a response to criticism from US President Donald Trump, asserting that "debating again" was "not in his interest".
"The speech I gave at the prayer for peace two days ago (in northwestern Cameroon, editor's note) was written two weeks ago, well before" the criticisms from the American president, Leo XIV told reporters on board the flight between Cameroon and Angola.
"And yet, it was perceived as if I was trying to debate the president again, which is not at all in my interest," added the American pope, referring to a speech in which he had denounced the "handful of tyrants" who "are ravaging the world," which was interpreted by some of the press, particularly in the United States, as an allusion to Donald Trump.
