Les Etats-Unis pourraient refuser un visa pour cause d'obésité
Foreigners seeking to immigrate to the United States could be denied a visa because of their health condition, including obesity, according to a State Department directive that is part of the Trump administration's tightening of immigration policy.
The new rules, which significantly expand those already in place, are contained in a notice sent earlier this month by Secretary of State Marco Rubio to U.S. embassies and consulates around the world.
The pathologies mentioned include obesity, diabetes, and cancer, which can require "treatment costing several hundred thousand dollars."
"You must take into account the applicant's state of health," states this notice, first revealed by the specialist website KFF Health News and whose content was confirmed by AFP.
Embassies are also asked to assess whether dependents have "disabilities, chronic illnesses or other special needs and require care".
The United States is one of the countries most affected by obesity in the world, due in particular to diet and lack of physical exercise.
Since returning to power in January, President Donald Trump has made the fight against illegal immigration an absolute priority, but he has also considerably tightened the conditions for entry into the United States for regular migrants.
In addition, the State Department has revoked tens of thousands of visas for people in the United States, including for opinions deemed anti-American.
"It is no secret that the Trump administration prioritizes the interests of the American people," State Department Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott said in an email.
"This includes implementing policies to ensure that our immigration system is not a burden on American taxpayers," he added.
Applicants for long-term visas must already undergo a medical examination and are screened for communicable diseases.
