L'Iran reporte les funérailles nationales pour Khamenei prévues mercredi
Iran decided on Wednesday to postpone the national funeral for Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, initially scheduled for the evening in Tehran, as the country has been facing Israeli-American strikes for five days.
"The farewell ceremony for the martyred imam has been postponed (...) in anticipation of an unprecedented turnout," state television said, adding that the new date would be "announced later."
On Wednesday morning, a tribute was announced for that same evening in Tehran in front of the body of Ali Khamenei, who died at 86 in a strike, and who is to be buried in the holy city of Mashhad (northeast), where he was from.
The Iranian capital Tehran has been the target of Israeli-American bombings since Saturday, which are aimed at military and government infrastructure.
The authorities have made no connection with the security situation.
"This ceremony is being postponed due to numerous calls from across the country, the expected participation of millions of people and the need to provide the appropriate infrastructure" for such a crowd, Mohsen Mahmoudi, the director of the Islamic Development Coordination Council of Tehran, the institution in charge of organizing the funeral, told television.
