First Lady Melania Trump on Monday sharply criticized talk show host Jimmy Kimmel, accusing the frequent critic of Donald Trump of promoting "hate and violent rhetoric" after a monologue broadcast last week that provoked the ire of the administration.

This statement on X (formerly Twitter) comes two days after the shooting at the White House Correspondents' Dinner, which was attended by the presidential couple. According to the White House, the suspect allegedly sought to assassinate Donald Trump and senior officials in his administration.

A parody deemed "incendiary"

Two days before the incident, Jimmy Kimmel had parodied the traditional comedic monologue of these galas on his ABC show. During his performance, the host notably declared that the First Lady had "the aura of a widow-to-be".

These remarks were strongly condemned by the American right on Monday. James Blair, a senior White House official, denounced the comments as aiming to "legitimize political violence." "Jimmy Kimmel should not be on the air," he insisted on social media.

Melania Trump steps into the fray

For Melania Trump, this monologue about her family "is not humor." "People like Kimmel shouldn't have the opportunity to enter our homes every night to spread hate," added the First Lady, calling the host a "coward" and urging ABC to take action.

This isn't the first time the late-night talk show star has found himself in the crosshairs of the Trump administration. Last September, ABC suspended the host after accusations of politically exploiting the murder of a pro-Trump influencer, before reinstating him a week later amid accusations of censorship. Donald Trump then denounced this return on what he called "ABC fake news."

Ohhh bon Dieu on est fatigué de cette administration catastrophique... Melania Trump n'a rien à dire. En tant que mère et femme, nous ne l'avons pas entendu sur la mort de dizaine de milliers de morts à Gaza, Liban, RDC, haiti, Venezuela, Chine (Ouïghour), Ukraine, etc. Et elle ramène sa fraise alors qu'un amendement garantie la liberté d'expression. Que ne fait ni ne dit son raciste et inculte de d'époux?
