Guerre au Moyen-Orient : des véhicules à destination de Dubaï bloqués au Kenya
Thousands of high-end cars shipped from Japan to Dubai were unloaded on the Kenyan island of Lamu.
The ship carrying the cargo could not reach the United Arab Emirates, due to the war in the Middle East which led to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
"Behind us is a ship called the Grande Florida, belonging to the Grimaldi Shipping Line. It is designed for transporting vehicles. Its total capacity is 9,000 vehicles. The ship is 200 meters long and arrived with 3,800 vehicles to unload in this port of Lamu," explains Abdulaziz Mzee, director of the port of Lamu.
More than 4,000 vehicles have had to be unloaded here since last week from two ships. Kenyan media showed dozens of gleaming Porsches parked in a port warehouse. Another container ship carrying 5,000 vehicles is expected next week. Port officials are calling it a windfall, despite the circumstances.
"This is not a reason to rejoice, as people there are suffering and facing difficulties, but at the same time, it is a commercial boon, because after these two ships, we also expect others to dock in this port of Lamu," said the port director.
Kenyan port authorities say it is destined to become Africa's premier deep-water transshipment hub.
