Milan : Un tramway déraille, deux morts et 38 blessés
The causes of this tram accident are not yet precisely known.
A tram derailed and crashed into a building in Milan, northern Italy, on Friday, killing two people and injuring 38, a police source said. One of the victims was struck by the tram when it derailed, and the second was a passenger, the city's mayor, Giuseppe Sala, told reporters at the scene.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed her "deepest condolences." Initial findings of the investigation suggest the driver did not activate a switch, according to media reports. The same sources indicated that the driver had also passed the line's terminus before the accident.
"There was a man trapped under the tram, his arm was caught," a witness told AFP. "There were many injured people inside the tram; I saw an old man completely covered in blood," he added.
Prosecutor Marcello Viola, in charge of the investigation, stated that the impact between the tram and the building it struck was "devastating." He specified that one of the deceased was an Italian man in his sixties, and the other an immigrant who lived in the city.
