Palestine, Ukraine, Soudan, … : Pep Guardiola refuse le silence
On the eve of the League Cup semi-final second leg against Newcastle, Pep Guardiola delivered a remarkable press conference, far removed from his usual tactical considerations. The Manchester City manager used his opportunity to express his deep concern about the conflicts ravaging several regions of the world. He specifically mentioned Palestine, Ukraine, and Sudan.
Visibly moved, the Catalan coach denounced what he considers a form of collective indifference to the suffering of civilians. "I don't understand how one can remain unmoved when seeing these images every day, these fathers, these mothers, these children, these shattered lives," he said.
Guardiola emphasized the human dimension of his message. "It's not about who is right or wrong. These are our problems as human beings," he continued, before denouncing the violence perpetrated against civilian populations: "Killing thousands of innocent people? It hurts me."
Aware that his comments might be upsetting, the City manager nevertheless stands by his position and affirms that he will continue to speak out. "When I see these images, I'm sorry it hurts. It's for my children, my family, for you," he explained, urging people not to look away.
For Guardiola, silence is a form of surrender. "Justice? We must speak out, otherwise we'll move on to something else. No society is perfect, but we must work towards a better world," he concludes.
