"Plus la force de pleurer": Save the Children décrit la lente agonie d'enfants de Gaza

The starving children of Gaza "have reached their breaking point, where is yours?" the head of Save the Children told the UN on Wednesday, describing in detail the slow agony of children who no longer even have the strength to cry.

Invited to speak at a Security Council meeting on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Inger Ashing insisted that the famine declared in Gaza last week by the UN is not just a "technical term."

"When there isn't enough to eat, children suffer from severe malnutrition, and then they die slowly and painfully. That, in simple terms, is what starvation is," she continued, before describing the stages of this wasting away over a few weeks, the body "consuming itself," "eating muscles and vital organs," until the last breath.

"And yet, our clinics are almost silent. Children no longer have the strength to speak or cry as they die. They lie there, emaciated, literally wasting away before our eyes, their tiny bodies overcome by hunger and disease," she said.

"We told you loud and clear that this was coming," she said. "Everyone in this room has a legal and moral responsibility to act to stop this atrocity."

"Ending this man-made crisis requires us to act as if it is our mother, our father, our child, our family who is trying to survive in Gaza today," said Joyce Msuya, deputy chief of humanitarian operations at the UN.

She welcomed the "slight increase" in humanitarian aid that has been able to enter the Palestinian territory in recent weeks, as well as the resumption of commercial food deliveries.

"These are important developments, but they will neither reverse the famine nor stop its progress," she warned.

After months of warnings, the Rome-based Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) declared on August 22 that famine was affecting 500,000 people in Gaza governorate, which covers about a fifth of Palestinian territory, including Gaza City.

The UN-backed IPC also warned that famine would spread to the central governorates of Deir el-Balah and Khan Younis by the end of September, covering about two-thirds of Gaza.

Israel on Wednesday demanded the immediate withdrawal of the report, saying it was "fabricated."

In a joint statement read after the meeting, 14 members of the Security Council (all except the United States, an ally of Israel), expressed their "deep concern" about the famine in Gaza, affirming their "confidence" in the work and methodology of the IPC.

"The use of starvation as a method of warfare is clearly prohibited by international humanitarian law. The famine in Gaza must be stopped immediately," they added.
