Présidentielle au Honduras: le conservateur Nasry Asfura, soutenu par Donald Trump, déclaré vainqueur

After days of counting and verifying ballots amid tensions, suspicions of fraud, and intervention by Donald Trump, the winner of the presidential election in Honduras is now known. Nasry Asfura, the US president's "favorite" candidate and a right-wing conservative, won the election, which took place on November 30.

Honduras finally knows the winner of the presidential election held on November 30th. The National Electoral Commission announced the result this Wednesday, December 24th: conservative Nasry Asfura won with 40.3% of the vote against 39.5% for his rival, centrist Salvador Nasralla. Weeks of waiting, close results, and a chaotic count followed, as 15% of the tally sheets had to be examined manually.

After four years of leftist President Xiomara Castro's rule, this victory accentuates the rise of right-wing governments in Latin America following the shifts in power in Chile, Bolivia, Peru, and Argentina. However, the region's two largest economies, Brazil and Mexico, remain governed by the left.

Accusations of embezzlement

The winner, Nasry Asfura, is 67 years old. The son of Palestinian migrants, he comes from the National Party, the party that took power after the 2009 coup.

Among his notable achievements, Nasry Asfura has two controversial terms as mayor of the country's capital, during which he is accused of embezzling more than 7 million euros for his construction company. His name also appeared in the "Panama Papers."

Supported throughout his campaign by Donald Trump, his victory was immediately welcomed by Marco Rubio, the head of American diplomacy who recognized a "clear" and "undeniable" victory, calling on all parties "to respect the results".

"We look forward to working with his administration to advance our bilateral and regional security cooperation, end illegal immigration to the United States, and strengthen economic ties between our two countries," he added.
