She was referring to Donald Trump's speech, a typically humorous exercise where the president must demonstrate self-deprecation, delivered before representatives of major American media outlets. But the metaphor she used proved perfectly accurate later that evening.
"He's ready to rumble, the speech will be classic Donald J. Trump: it will be funny, entertaining, and there will be a few shots fired tonight in the room," joked the White House spokeswoman.
She was referring to the few barbs and verbal jabs that Donald Trump had apparently planned to direct at the journalists present or other prominent figures, as is customary. But the choice of words drew smiles from observers.
"Everyone should follow this, it's going to be great, I can't wait to hear the speech," continued Karoline Leavitt, as the Fox News journalist laughed, before finally clarifying that the speech had been written, in large part, by the White House press secretary.
Later, during his press conference following the shooting, Donald Trump reiterated that the event would be rescheduled for the future. Perhaps then we will hear the gunshots mentioned by Karoline Leavitt.
