South Sudan: A dead man appointed to an electoral committee, the government embarrassed

South Sudan recently appointed a man who has been dead for five years, Steward Sorobo, to be part of a committee tasked with preparing for the upcoming presidential elections.

This decision sparked a wave of mockery on social media and forced the government to issue an apology.

According to local media, Steward Sorobo died five years ago, but his name was among those appointed by President Salva Kiir to plan the election. The presidency acknowledged the error and announced that Sorobo would be removed from the list of appointees.

Presidential spokesman David Amour Majur admitted that "the presidency learned with regret that one of the signatories has unfortunately passed away" and attributed the error to a procedural oversight. Majur was dismissed the day after the announcement.

Sorobo's family denounced a "grave cultural and spiritual violation" and demanded reparations for the "spiritual harm caused." Internet users also reacted ironically, suggesting that Sorobo be kept in his position as "coordinator between the living and the dead."

This case comes at a delicate time for South Sudan, which has never held elections since its independence in 2011. Elections scheduled for 2024 have been postponed to December 2026, but many analysts doubt that the country will be able to hold them.
