Sri Lanka : 22 moines boudhistes arrêtés avec cinq kilos de cannabis chacun
According to a spokesperson for Sri Lankan customs, twenty-two monks were arrested this Sunday, April 26, at the international airport near Colombo with 110 kilos of a potent type of cannabis. Most of them are young students.
A trip home that didn't go as planned. Twenty-two Sri Lankan monks were returning to their country after a four-day holiday in Thailand when they were arrested at the international airport near Colombo. The reason? They had concealed Kush, a potent strain of cannabis, in their luggage.
According to a spokesperson for Sri Lankan customs, "each was carrying approximately five kilograms of narcotics concealed within false walls of their luggage." She added that the monks had been handed over to the police.
Brought before a magistrate today
The monks, most of whom are young students from temples across Sri Lanka, are due to appear before a magistrate later on Sunday. Customs officials said it was the largest seizure of Kush ever made at the South Asian country's main international airport.
Last year, a 21-year-old British woman was arrested with 46 kilos of drugs at the same airport. She too was travelling from Bangkok to Colombo.
In recent years, Sri Lankan authorities have also made several seizures of large shipments of heroin and other narcotics smuggled into the country on small fishing boats.
