Le Nobel de littérature décerné à l'écrivain hongrois Laszlo Krasznahorkai
The 2025 Nobel Prize in Literature has been awarded to Hungarian writer Laszlo Krasznahorkai, 71, the Swedish Academy announced on Thursday.
The writer was awarded "for his fascinating and visionary work which, in the midst of apocalyptic terror, reaffirms the power of art," the jury explained.
Born on January 5, 1954, in Gyula, in southeastern Hungary, Laszlo Krasznahorkai is best read in Germany, where he lived for years, and in Hungary, where he is considered by many to be one of the country's most important living authors.
His name has been recurring in the speculations of literary critics for several years.
László Krasznahorkai is "a great epic writer in the Central European tradition that stretches from Kafka to Thomas Bernhard, and is characterized by absurdism and grotesque excess. But he has more than one string to his bow, and he also looks to the East, adopting a more contemplative and finely calibrated tone," according to the Academy.
Difficult and demanding, his style has been described by the Hungarian himself as "reality examined to the point of madness." His penchant for long sentences and rare paragraph breaks has also earned the writer the label of "obsessive."
Last year, South Korean writer Han Kang won the prestigious award, becoming the first Asian woman to win.
Since its inception, the Nobel Prize in Literature has been dominated by men and Western literature. Of the 122 laureates, only 18 have been women, and a minority of the winning authors speak Asian or Middle Eastern languages. No African languages are represented.
The Nobel Prize consists of a diploma, a medal and a check for 11 million crowns (about 1 million euros).
