Le pape juge "inacceptable" la menace qui pèse sur l'ensemble de la population iranienne
Pope Leo XIV on Tuesday deemed "unacceptable" the threat by US President Donald Trump to "annihilate Iranian civilization" if Iran did not respect his midnight ultimatum to open the Strait of Hormuz.
"Today (...), there was this threat against the entire Iranian people, and that is truly unacceptable. There are certainly questions of international law, but much more than that, it is a moral question," the Pope told reporters as he left his residence in Castel Gandolfo, near Rome, for the Vatican, without specifically mentioning the American threats against Iran.
But his comments come just hours before the ultimatum expiring at 8:00 p.m. Washington time (midnight GMT) for Iran to unblock navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, crucial for the world's oil supply.
"An entire civilization is going to die tonight," Mr. Trump asserted on Tuesday, adding: "I don't want it to happen, but it probably will."
Leo XIV, the first American Catholic pope, declared that "attacks against civilian infrastructure (were) against international law".
He urged the parties to the conflict to "return to the table".
"Let's talk. Let's seek solutions in a peaceful way," the Pope said.
The Pope urged "citizens of all countries involved to contact authorities, political leaders, members of Congress, and to ask them, to tell them to work for peace and to always reject war."
