The Trump administration is calling on "white men" to complain about potential discrimination.

L'administration Trump appelle les "hommes blancs" à se plaindre d'éventuelles discriminations

"Are you a white man who has experienced discrimination at work?" This is the question posed by an official in the Trump administration and president of the federal agency founded to combat the segregation of African Americans.

"You may have the right to claim compensation," adds Andrea Lucas in a video published this week on X and shared by Vice President JD Vance, who uses vocabulary long confined to the radical right.

Created by the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964, the federal agency responsible for enforcing employment discrimination laws (EEOC) now highlights, on its website, its support for those who claim to be victims of affirmative action in favor of minorities, or of "anti-American" discrimination.

"The EEOC is committed to identifying, combating and eliminating all forms of discrimination based on race and sex, including against white men, as applicants and employees," adds its president.

Since returning to the presidency in January, Donald Trump and his administration have been waging a political battle to dismantle affirmative action practices, from university campuses to businesses and the state.

Often referred to by the acronym DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion), these practices, initially put in place to support minorities who are victims of inequality, are in the crosshairs of American conservatives who are now on the offensive against everything they consider "woke".

A leading figure in this movement, JD Vance published an article this week on X in which a Hollywood screenwriter recounts being denied a role in a project because he is a young white man. The DEI movement "was a deliberate project of discrimination, especially against white men," the US vice president commented.

"You are absolutely right," Andrea Lucas responded on X, denouncing "widespread systematic and illegal discrimination (which) has primarily targeted white men" and adding that her agency "will not stop until this discrimination is eliminated."

"We need people who will speak out" on this issue, she said.

According to a study by the University of Massachusetts, the proportion of African-American employees who file a complaint with the EEOC is 195 times higher than for white employees.

In 2020 in the United States, the average wealth of white households was about 10 times higher than that of an African American household, according to census data analyzed by the Pew Research Center.

And according to this highly regarded institute, women earn on average 85% of the average salary of men.

Under Andrea Lucas's leadership, the EEOC also made the fight against "discrimination against American workers" a priority.

"Many employers have rules and practices that favor undocumented immigrants, migrant workers (...) over American workers — in direct violation of federal labor law," Andrea Lucas wrote in a statement in mid-November.

Since then, her agency has reported on two employers singled out on this issue, including a Californian supermarket chain that it suspects of "excluding non-Hispanic workers from hiring".

And this year, according to the American press, the EEOC had ended investigations into suspected discrimination against transgender people, who were particularly targeted by the Trump administration.
