According to several US media outlets, US armed forces are conducting an operation in the North Atlantic on Wednesday to take control of a Russian-flagged oil tanker that has been pursued for several days by Washington as part of its blockade against tankers linked to Venezuela.
The operation comes a few hours after press reports that Russia sent at least one of its naval vessels to escort the ship.
The US operation is being conducted by coast guards while Russian military vessels are in the vicinity, according to Reuters, which broke the story, and which has since been confirmed by CNN and Fox News.
The Russian media outlet RT published photos purported to show a military helicopter above the ship, in the open sea.
The ship, originally named Bella 1, has been under US sanctions since 2024 for its alleged links with Iran and the Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah.
Recently renamed Marinera and now flying the Russian flag, it was in Iceland's exclusive economic zone around 07:00 GMT on Wednesday, after crossing the Atlantic Ocean in international waters, according to Bloomberg maritime tracking data.
It had been pursued since December 21 by the US Coast Guard while en route to Venezuela and was not carrying any cargo, according to the specialist website TankerTrackers.
The United States announced in late December, before capturing President Nicolas Maduro in Caracas, the imposition of a naval blockade around Venezuela against oil tankers allegedly under sanctions. They have already seized two vessels, suspected by Washington of transporting Venezuelan oil subject to sanctions.

The ship is part of a clandestine fleet that has transported oil for Russia, Iran and Venezuela in violation of sanctions imposed by the United States and other countries, according to Washington.
In a statement prior to the reports published by US media, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday that it was following the situation "with concern".
"For reasons beyond our understanding, the Russian vessel is attracting increased attention from the US military and NATO - attention that is clearly disproportionate to its peaceful status," the ministry said.
Two other oil tankers, the Hyperion and the Premier, under US sanctions and which emitted a signal in the Caribbean Sea near Venezuela in the past week, also came under the Russian flag in December.
The Hyperion was sailing in the Atlantic on Wednesday with the port of Ust-Luga (Russia) as its destination, according to its navigation information, while the Premier shared a position in the Caribbean Sea.
Three other sanctioned oil tankers identified by AFP in mid-December near Venezuela appeared on Wednesday under the Russian flag in the online register of the Russian Ministry of Transport, while they are listed under other flags in the official database of the International Maritime Organization.

The last word belongs to Allah swt . Racist bigots you reap what you sow.
Be ready it's not funny
