Trump accuse l'Iran de développer des missiles pouvant "atteindre bientôt les Etats-Unis"
Donald Trump on Tuesday accused Iran of developing weapons capable of striking the United States, but stated during his policy address to Congress that he favoured the diplomatic route with Tehran.
Iran has "already developed missiles that can threaten Europe and our military bases" and "is working to build missiles that could soon reach the United States," said the US president, who has amassed a large military armada in the Gulf region.
"They had been warned not to attempt to rebuild their weapons program in the future, particularly nuclear weapons. Yet they continue and (...) are currently pursuing their sinister nuclear ambitions," he added.
"My preference is for a resolution of this problem through diplomacy, but one thing is certain: I will never allow the world's leading sponsor of terrorism (...) to acquire a nuclear weapon," Donald Trump stated during his "State of the Union address."
"We are in negotiations with them. They want to reach an agreement, but we have not yet heard those key words: 'We will never have nuclear weapons,'" Mr. Trump added.
Tehran denies such military ambitions, but insists on its right to civilian nuclear power, under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) to which it is a signatory.
Iran warned on Monday that any US attack, including a "limited strike," would prompt it to retaliate "forcefully," after the US president raised such an option if talks with Tehran failed.
"Our missiles cannot reach American soil. We must therefore obviously find another solution (...) and strike the American base in the region," said Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, without specifying which one.
According to a US congressional report dated 2025, the Iranian arsenal can reach targets up to 3,000 kilometers away, far from the territory of the United States.
On Tuesday, however, the Iranian minister indicated that an agreement with the United States was "within reach", two days before a new round of talks between the two countries scheduled for Thursday in Geneva.
- China is absent -
In his speech, the Republican leader did not dwell on foreign policy.
In addition to Iran, he mentioned the military operation that led to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on January 3, and hailed the country as "a new friend and partner" of the United States.
He also boasted of having restored American "domination" in Latin America, and repeated that he had "ended eight wars," which observers consider to be at the very least an exaggeration.
As the war in Ukraine entered its fifth year on Tuesday, Mr. Trump made only a brief reference to it, while praising NATO's decision to dedicate 5% of gross domestic product to defense.
In contrast, the American president did not say a word about China, despite the fact that the United States considers Beijing to be its main rival.
