Donald Trump announced Tuesday that six suspected drug traffickers had been killed in a new US strike off the coast of Venezuela, the fifth known of its kind since early September amid heightened tensions between Washington and Caracas.
The United States targeted "a vessel affiliated with a foreign terrorist organization engaged in drug trafficking" in international waters in the Caribbean, off the Venezuelan coast, the American president wrote on his Truth Social platform.
"Six drug traffickers on board the ship were killed in the strike," he added.
The intelligence, the US president added, "confirmed that the ship was engaged in drug trafficking, was associated with an illegal drug trafficking network and was traveling along a route" usually used by an organization designated as terrorist, as Donald Trump has described several drug cartels.
The legality of these strikes in foreign or international waters, against suspects who have not been intercepted or questioned, is debated.
Washington accuses Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his government of running a vast drug trafficking organization to the United States and deployed eight warships and a nuclear-powered submarine off the coast of Venezuela in early September, officially as part of an anti-narcotics operation.
Caracas vigorously denies this and, in response to the US deployment, which it considers a "military threat," has launched military exercises and the mobilization of reservists. President Nicolas Maduro says Washington is using drug trafficking as a pretext "to impose regime change" and seize the country's significant oil reserves.
With the strike announced Tuesday by Donald Trump, at least five boats presented as being those of drug traffickers have now been destroyed since September 2, with a human toll of at least 27 people killed.

Bizarre !
Mamadou = François du Bois.
