During his State of the Union address to Congress on Tuesday, Donald Trump officially tasked his vice president, JD Vance, with waging a "war on welfare fraud." Although this initiative began four months ago, the US president used this solemn platform to mark a major political turning point in his fight against financial irregularities, which he directly blames on immigrants.
The president once again launched a virulent attack on Minnesota's Somali community, which he claims is involved in a vast embezzlement scandal. "The Somali pirates who looted Minnesota remind us that there are many areas in the world where corruption and lawlessness are the norm," he declared. Donald Trump drew a direct link between uncontrolled immigration and the importation of cultures he deems problematic, asserting that American citizens pay the price through increased crime and higher healthcare costs.
In an openly political move, the White House occupant cited only states led by Democrats as examples of territories riddled with such fraud. JD Vance will therefore have the daunting task of managing this highly sensitive issue, while Trump reiterates his determination: "We're going to take care of this problem, we're serious."
