Uber va lancer ses taxis volants cette année à Dubaï
At an event held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Uber and the American manufacturer Joby Aviation announced the commercial launch of their electric air taxi (eVTOL) in the coming months. The aircraft, which can accommodate four passengers and a pilot, features a refined interior with panoramic windows, reminiscent of the comfort of a luxury car.
A 1 hour 20 minute car journey reduced to just 11 minutes by air
Its main advantage is the time it saves passengers. Indeed, according to Uber, a typical commute in Dubai during rush hour takes up to 1 hour and 20 minutes by car. By air, aboard the eVTOL, the same journey is reduced to just 11 minutes. An Uber sedan picks up the passenger, takes them to a vertiport, they fly over the traffic jams, and another sedan is waiting at the destination vertiport to complete the rest of the journey with them.
Uber plans to highlight this efficiency in mobility to justify the price of flights, which has not yet been revealed.
Acoustic comfort
The other advantage of the eVTOL is its acoustic comfort. Indeed, the aircraft is "100 times quieter than a conventional helicopter" during takeoff and can fly at speeds up to 320 km/h with a claimed range of 160 km. Passengers will therefore be able to converse without using noise-canceling headphones.
The only question that ultimately arises is: will these flying taxis be a mass solution or a new luxury product for a global elite wishing to escape traffic jams?
