The creation of a Palestinian state would be "national suicide" for Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned Friday at the UN, castigating Western countries and promising to "finish the job" against Hamas in Gaza.
In a speech with an offensive tone and remaining firm in his positions, the Israeli leader rejected accusations of "genocide" in the Gaza Strip and virulently attacked Western countries, including France, which recognized the State of Palestine this week.
These countries have "given in" to Hamas, proving that "it pays to kill Jews," he said.
"Here is another message for Western leaders: Israel will not allow you to impose a terrorist state on us. We will not commit national suicide because you lack the courage to face a hostile media and anti-Semitic mobs crying for Israel's blood," he said, denouncing criticism of Israel's actions in Gaza as "anti-Semitic lies."
At a summit held Monday by France and Saudi Arabia on the future of the two-state solution, with Palestinians and Israelis living side by side in peace and security, a dozen countries, including France, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia, formally recognized the State of Palestine, provoking the anger of Israel.
The Israeli Prime Minister, who arrived in New York the previous evening and is also due to travel to Washington, assured that he had installed loudspeakers in the Gaza Strip so that the hostages still held by Hamas could hear his speech at the UN podium.
Addressing the hostages, "We have not forgotten you, not even for a second. The people of Israel are with you. We will not rest until you all return home," he said in Hebrew and then in English.
His speech began to applause from his supporters invited into the hall and to boos from delegates leaving the UN General Assembly.
Now, Israel "wants to finish the job" against Hamas "as quickly as possible" in a Gaza Strip ravaged by nearly two years of war, he said.
While welcoming the support of US President Donald Trump, the Israeli leader remained discreet regarding the occupied West Bank.
While his government says it wants to expand Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank, the American president warned on Thursday that he would not allow Israel to annex this territory.
"I will not allow Israel to annex the West Bank. No, I will not allow it. It will not happen," Donald Trump said, after saying he had spoken with Mr. Netanyahu.
Mr. Netanyahu's speech came as hopes for peace focus on a new plan presented this week by Donald Trump to Arab and Muslim countries.
"I think we have a deal," Donald Trump assured on Friday. "It will be a deal that brings back the hostages. It will be a deal that ends the war," the US president promised at the White House.
According to a diplomatic source familiar with the meeting held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, the 21-point US plan includes a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, the release of Israeli hostages held in the Palestinian territory, an Israeli withdrawal, and future governance of Gaza without Hamas, whose unprecedented attacks on October 7, 2023, triggered the war.
Denied a visa by the US authorities, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas spoke to the UN via video on Thursday, repeating the pledges he made a few months ago to convince France, in particular, to recognize the State of Palestine.
"Hamas will have no role to play in governance" and will have to surrender its weapons to the Palestinian Authority, he insisted, also condemning the attacks of October 7 and anti-Semitism, which he does not want to see confused with "solidarity with the Palestinian cause."
On Friday, hundreds of people protested in the streets of New York against Benjamin Netanyahu, who has been the target of an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court for war crimes and crimes against humanity since late 2024.
"We are here to demand justice, that is, that Netanyahu be arrested and Israel be punished," pro-Palestinian protester Nadia Tannous told AFP.
