Une Iranienne arrêtée à Los Angeles pour trafic d'armes vers le Soudan
An Iranian national accused of arranging the sale of Iranian-made weapons to Sudan was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport, a federal prosecutor said Sunday.
Shamim Mafi, 44, is accused of "negotiating the sale to Sudan of drones, bombs, detonators and millions of rounds of ammunition manufactured by Iran," wrote federal prosecutor Bill Essayli in a message on X.
A resident of Woodland Hills, a suburb of Los Angeles, the Iranian national became a legal permanent resident of the United States in 2016.
Arrested on Saturday, she faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. The prosecutor's message was accompanied by photos of a woman identified as Shamim Mafi, surrounded by federal agents at the airport. Another photo showed a drone on an airport tarmac and bundles of cash.
The United Nations recently warned that Sudan risks sinking into "large-scale famine and collapse" as the war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitaries enters its fourth year.
The UN's top official for Sudan, Denise Brown, told AFP on Thursday that Sudan was facing the world's largest humanitarian crisis, and that weapons from outside sources bore a major responsibility.
On several occasions, the UN has called on foreign powers to stop fueling the war.
The Sudanese army has benefited from the support of Egypt and Saudi Arabia and has deployed, in particular, drones manufactured in Türkiye and Iran.
Many criticisms have also targeted the United Arab Emirates, which denies having supplied weapons to the FSR, accused of genocide.
