Une jeune femme décède d’hyperthermie lors d’une compétition d’Hyrox à Lyon: “Incompréhensible”
A 28-year-old woman died on Sunday from “exercise-induced hyperthermia” during a competition combining running and fitness in Chassieu, a suburb of Lyon.
A young woman of French nationality collapsed on the track during an 8km run, even though the room was air-conditioned with a temperature between 18 and 20 degrees, an optimal humidity level between 65% and 70%, and water points "multiplied" along the course, Maxime Villalongue, the producer of Hyrox France, told AFP, confirming information from Actu Lyon.
The outside temperature was above “31 degrees” that day, added the event manager, which took place from Thursday to Sunday at Eurexpo.
“An absolute emergency”
The runner was taken to hospital “in absolute emergency” by the emergency services, firefighters told AFP without commenting on the cause of the illness.
“It’s incomprehensible. Under these circumstances, we wonder how it’s even possible,” added Mr. Villalongue, who said he was in constant contact with the family of the runner, “a trained athlete.” “I think the athletes arrived there having either been outside in the sun for too long or hadn’t drunk enough,” he suggested.
Also on Sunday, a participant in the La Pyrénéenne footrace in Paris died during the event, while about ten runners from another event, in Maisons-Alfort (Val-de-Marne), were hospitalized in “absolute emergency”, firefighters told AFP.
