Etats-Unis : Un condamné exécuté par inhalation d’azote, une forme de « torture » selon les experts
Anthony Boyd had been sentenced to death for kidnapping and murder in the absence of physical evidence. He continued to maintain his innocence.
This is the 40th execution carried out in the United States since the beginning of the year. A man convicted of kidnapping and murder was executed Thursday in Alabama, in the south of the country, by inhalation of nitrogen, local authorities announced. A method compared by UN experts to a form of "torture."
Anthony Boyd was sentenced to death for the 1993 kidnapping and murder of Gregory Huguley, who was burned alive by his captors over a $200 drug debt. Convicted in the absence of physical evidence of his presence at the crime scene, Anthony Boyd continued to maintain his innocence.
Injection, nitrogen, firing squad
The vast majority of executions are carried out by lethal injection, with 33 carried out in the country so far in 2025. Five were carried out by nitrogen inhalation, a method used for the first time in the world by Alabama in 2024 and compared by UN experts to a form of "torture," and two by firing squad in South Carolina, for the first time in the United States since 2010.
Six executions are scheduled across the country by the end of the year. The death penalty has been abolished in 23 of the 50 US states. Three others, California, Oregon, and Pennsylvania, have a governor's moratorium on executions.
