Etats-Unis: des Etats républicains envoient des troupes à Washington
The Republican governor of Mississippi, following those of Ohio, West Virginia and South Carolina, announced on Monday the deployment of some 200 National Guardsmen to Washington, which President Donald Trump intends to "cleanse" of gangs.
"I have approved the deployment of approximately 200 Mississippi National Guard troops to Washington, D.C., to support President Trump's efforts to restore law and order to our nation's capital," Gov. Tate Reeves said in a statement.
The announcement follows those of Ohio, West Virginia and South Carolina, other Republican states that have also announced such deployments in the federal capital, administered by Democrats.
Ohio will send 150 reservists, South Carolina about 200, while West Virginia will provide about 350, some of whom have already arrived in Washington. They will join 800 National Guard members already mobilized in the capital.
Last week, Mr. Trump explained that he was placing law enforcement in the federal capital under the control of his administration and deploying the National Guard there.
Washington's Democratic Mayor Muriel Bowser has dismissed the outbreak of violence, saying it is "at its lowest level in 30 years."
The US president had already deployed the National Guard and Marines to Los Angeles during the massive June protests against his administration's immigration policy.
It was the first such deployment against the will of a local governor since 1965.
