A fierce battle. For the past few days, a video has been going viral on social media. It shows two rats fighting over a bagel that had been abandoned on the New York subway tracks.
The rodents positioned themselves on either side of the piece of bread, trying to seize it for over two minutes. A third rat even joined the battle before the arrival of a subway train brought it to an end.
As in Paris and other major cities, it's not uncommon to see rats in the streets or on the subway in New York. Authorities have decided to tackle this problem with a new technique: stressing the rats to prevent them from reproducing.
To achieve this, New York authorities decided to remove trash from the streets, seal access points to buildings, and raise awareness among residents. Their goal? To prevent rats from accessing their food source, thereby creating physiological stress in the rodents, which notably results in a decrease in their reproduction rate.
The city has increased its budgets dedicated to rat control, with $4.7 million allocated for 2025, compared to $3.5 million in 2023.
Since the implementation of these combined measures, a significant decrease in rat reports has been recorded, with a 25% reduction in 2024 compared to the previous year, according to official data, AFP reported in August 2025.
In the street, in the subway, rats are everywhere, and even in... planes! 250 passengers were stranded in Aruba and Bonaire (Caribbean) on Wednesday, December 10, after an XXL rat made its way onto the plane.
