Washington lève les restrictions de visas pour le Ghana

The United States has lifted its visa restrictions on Ghana, the US embassy in the West African country, a partner of Washington in President Donald Trump's anti-immigration policy, confirmed on Saturday.

On September 11, Ghanaian President John Mahama announced that his country had agreed, at Washington's request, to accept West African nationals deported from the United States.

The agreement was reached amid tensions with the United States, with the Trump administration increasing tariffs on Ghanaian products and restricting the number of visas.

"The maximum validity period for all categories of nonimmigrant visas for Ghanaians has been restored to its original duration" of five years with multiple entries, the US Embassy in Accra said on its X account.

This lifting of restrictions is the result of "several months of high-level diplomatic negotiations," Ghanaian Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa had welcomed on X the previous day.

The United States announced in June restrictions on most visas for citizens of Cameroon, Ethiopia, Ghana, and Nigeria, limiting them to three months and a single entry.

At least 14 West African nationals have been returned to Ghana since early September under the agreement, many details of which have been kept secret by Accra and Washington.

They all benefited, according to their lawyers, from American court decisions against forced return.

Ghana has sent at least four back to their home countries, according to an AFP tally.

After several weeks of detention in Ghana, where they were reportedly held under military guard in poor conditions, eight to ten of the deportees were sent to Togo last weekend and left to fend for themselves, US-based lawyer Meredyth Yoon told AFP.

Another plane has since arrived in Ghana, said Ms. Yoon, who did not specify the number of people on board.

Deporting people to third countries – often where they have never lived – has been one of US President Donald Trump's flagship measures since returning to the White House.

Ghana's decision to accept these deportees is based on humanitarian considerations and does not constitute an "endorsement" of US immigration policy, Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said.

Why are we, as Africans, out here French-kissing America’s colon? Seriously. It’s like we’re waiting for a Yelp review from Uncle Sam before we believe in our own cooking. ‘Hmm, America only gave us 2 stars on TripAdvisor Africa, maybe we don’t exist?’ Bro, our house may be minimalistic — yeah, it might just be a mat, a teapot, and that one uncle who won’t shut up about football but it’s OUR damn house.

Meanwhile, the U.S. is collapsing faster than a Jenga tower in a toddler’s daycare. Clever African Americans already saw the trailer: they’re on the first flight to Dakar, Accra, and Lagos. They’re basically speedrunning the ‘Become Senegalese’ DLC before the civil war patch drops in the States.

So let’s stop licking the West like a lollipop we didn’t even buy. Let them play Hunger Games Season 2 over there, while we build Wakanda Starter Pack Edition right here. It might be small, but at least no one’s asking us for a green card at the door.
