Washington fait état d'"informations crédibles" sur une attaque préparée par le Hamas contre des civils à Gaza
The State Department said Saturday it had "credible information" that the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas was planning an imminent attack on civilians in Gaza, which it said would be a "violation of the ceasefire."
"This planned attack against Palestinian civilians would constitute a direct and serious violation of the ceasefire agreement and would undermine the significant progress made through mediation efforts," the State Department said in a statement.
"If Hamas carries out this attack, measures will be taken to protect the people of Gaza and preserve the integrity of the ceasefire," he added.
The statement did not detail these measures, while President Trump has already threatened Hamas with retaliation after the execution of civilians this week.
"If Hamas continues to kill people in Gaza, which was not part of the agreement, we will have no choice but to go and kill them," the US president wrote on his Truth Social network on Thursday.
He did not specify who would be in charge of this potential operation.
Hamas and Israel agreed last week to a phased peace deal under which Israel would end its military offensive in Gaza in exchange for the release of hostages still held by Hamas after the October 7, 2023, attack.
The first phase of the agreement, involving the release of the living hostages—and the return of the remains of the dead hostages—is now being implemented.
Washington said it had informed the guarantors of the peace agreement — including the United States, Egypt, Qatar and Turkey — of the "imminent violation of the ceasefire by Hamas."
The Palestinian movement sought to tighten its grip on the devastated Gaza Strip this week with a campaign of reprisals and executions of people suspected of collaborating with Israel.
Hamas released a video on Tuesday showing summary executions of suspected "collaborators" in the streets of Gaza City.
