“We had to fight for our relationship very quickly.” A guest on the Canal+ program “En aparté” this Monday, February 17th, Omar Sy spoke candidly about his relationship with Hélène, the mother of his five children and his wife of 27 years. A longevity that, as the actor himself acknowledges, has become “a bit rare among our friends.” “Honestly, it goes by so fast…” remarks the star of Lupin, currently appearing in Anne Le Ny’s Dis-moi juste que tu m’aimes (Just Tell Me You Love Me), alongside Élodie Bouchez, Vanessa Paradis, and José Garcia.
"Like everyone else, we have our own little quirks."
Although their relationship has lasted, it hasn't always been smooth sailing. "We started with something a bit complicated in our story, so we had to fight back very quickly, we learned about battles. It's not easy either, it's like everyone else, we have our quirks, but it's okay, we're holding on," he says to the camera. A thinly veiled reference to their breakup in the late 1990s, which the couple had already discussed in Elsa Vigoureux's book, Viens on se parle (Come On Talk), published in 2024. "In August 1999, I left Omar," Hélène Sy revealed, as reported by Paris Match. At the time, she was working in a specialized care home while her partner was pursuing television ambitions.
But love was clearly stronger. "He came to pick me up there, in his rental car, a green Ford Ka, with a bouquet of roses. He was in love, he wanted to win me back," she recalled. "It was the meeting of two worlds," summarized the woman who now shares her life with the actor between France and Los Angeles, where they have settled with their five children—Selly, Sabah, Tidiane, Alijah, and Amani-Nour, aged 7 to 24. This choice allows the French star to maintain a more peaceful family life, away from his fame. "Without them, it's certain I wouldn't be the same anymore, that's obvious," Omar Sy added in an interview on the show "En aparté."
"I was anxious for my children."
On Friday, on France Inter radio, Omar Sy revisited the reasons that led him to leave France. "I left at the time because I needed to take a step back from what I was experiencing in France. With *The Intouchables*, my fame exploded, and I saw the repercussions on those around me, especially my children. It worried me," he told Rebecca Manzoni. "As a father, I was anxious about the impact this sudden media attention could have on them. How could I raise them with this pressure and these new perspectives on us?" Today, the former partner of Fred Testot says he is proud of his children's paths. "When I see the adults they have become, I know I made the right decision. They were able to grow up without the weight of others' opinions, by being themselves." The eldest have already found their way: Selly in photography, Sabah in music, and Tidiane in basketball.
