18 «otages» sénégalais du Maroc : Ahmet Khalifa Niass écrit au Roi Mohamed VI
According to Source A, Ahmet Khalifa Niass has sent a letter to King Mohammed VI of Morocco, requesting a pardon for the 18 Senegalese supporters sentenced to prison for their involvement in the incidents during the final of the last Africa Cup of Nations. In his letter, the newspaper notes, the religious leader recalls his personal ties to Hassan II, the late father of the current monarch, as well as the long-standing relations between the Moroccan and Senegalese people. "More than half of Senegalese people have their hearts in Fez," he emphasizes, according to Source A.
Invoking his status as "Amir al-Mouminine", Commander of the Faithful, Ahmet Khalifa Niass invites the King of Morocco to grant his pardon to the fans of the Lions, "now that the games are behind us", he mentions before predicting that if Mohammed VI grants his request, it "would resolve a thousand ills".
The 18 Senegalese men were sentenced to prison terms ranging from three months to one year. They have decided not to appeal this decision, which they consider unjust. Through their lawyer, Patrice Kabou, they stated that they feel like hostages of Morocco and prefer to wait patiently for their release.
