Affaire Farba Ngom : pourquoi El Malick Ndiaye a saisi Yassine Fall
The detention of Farba Ngom, imprisoned for over a year without trial despite court rulings in his favor, has drawn the attention of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). The global organization of parliaments sent a letter to the Speaker of the National Assembly, El Malick Ndiaye, demanding an explanation for the situation of their colleague, who is being held "without trial and without liberty."
Les Échos reports that the second-highest-ranking official in the country informed the National Assembly's bureau that he had been made aware of the matter. He indicated, however, that he had forwarded the request to the Minister of Justice, Yassine Fall, without specifying what action would be taken at the parliamentary level.
This move has drawn criticism and raised questions about the institution's independence. The newspaper asks: "Given the separation of powers, why was the Minister of Justice contacted?" Many observers believe this approach suggests that the Speaker of the National Assembly is "waiting for a decision from the executive branch before addressing the letter," thus appearing to disregard "the powers of members of parliament in the event of legal proceedings against one of their own."
