Jugé pour violence conjugale : Le couple échange de câlin à la barre
It's a story worthy of a soap opera. But it actually unfolded before the Dakar Magistrates' Court. B. Bougaleb, an employee of a local company, was appearing on charges of assault and battery against his wife, AC Niane, an intern at a large firm. However, this domestic violence case ended with hugs in the dock.
According to the investigation reports, the events date back to January 30, 2026, when the young woman, residing in Ouakam, contacted the gendarmerie to report domestic violence. In support of her claim, she submitted several medical certificates indicating temporary incapacity for work (ITT) of 2, 10, and 15 days.
During her hearing, AC Niane described a climate of tension and repeated assaults. She claimed that her husband searched her phone, locked her in the apartment, and regularly beat her. "Without the intervention of the neighbors, he could have taken my life," she stated.
For his part, the husband admitted to slapping her, while attempting to justify his actions by citing marital arguments, jealousy, harassment, and pressure within the couple. He explained that his wife, who had left for work, had contacted him via video call while he was working from home. He told her she was bothering him because he was focused on his work. Upon his return, an argument erupted, before he slapped her. "She was pushing me to the limit. It was getting on my nerves," he stated.
Brought before the public prosecutor on February 2nd, the man was placed under a detention order.
But the story took a different turn in court. Before the judge, AC Niane suddenly changed her tune. She withdrew her civil suit. She declared that her husband was "exemplary," that the medical certificates had been issued "by accident," and that the complaint had simply been a fit of anger. "I swear on the Holy Quran that he is an exemplary husband. He has never beaten me. I don't wish him to be poisoned. Because he takes care of me," she exclaimed before embracing her husband. The audience burst into laughter. "I love him more than anything in the world," the husband declared.
In his remarks, the public prosecutor admonished the defendant before requesting the application of criminal law. "An exemplary husband does not abuse his wife," argued the representative of the public prosecutor's office.
Lawyers Noyine Mbodji and Mame Coumba Kane pleaded for leniency from the court, which ultimately sentenced B. Bougaleb to two days in prison and a fine of 20,000 FCFA. The couple then shared another hug.
