« Extrait tronqué » : la ligne de défense de Cheikh Oumar Diagne
Arrested last Friday and remanded in custody this Monday after being brought before the prosecutor, Cheikh Oumar Diagne will be tried before the Dakar court of summary jurisdiction tomorrow, Wednesday, March 11. The secretary general of the Rally for Truth party is being prosecuted for spreading false news and engaging in actions likely to compromise public safety, Libération reports.
During his confrontation with investigators from the Urban Security Unit (SU), the newspaper reports, the opposition leader significantly softened the statements he made on the "Grand Plateau" program (Sen TV). While he had asserted that Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko had "given the order to kill" student Abdoulaye Bâ, he clarified during his hearing that his remarks were more about "moral and political responsibility."
According to him, this responsibility stems from the fact that the head of government allegedly admitted to having authorized the intervention of law enforcement on the university campus.
As reported by Libération, Cheikh Oumar Diagne insisted that it was a "political comment" made within the context of a public debate. He also deplored the truncated broadcast of the program, arguing that the selected and incriminating excerpt had distorted the meaning of his remarks and obscured the nuances he had presented.
