Drame familial à Thiès : 15 ans de réclusion pour M. Demba malgré le doute du procureur
The criminal chamber of the Thiès High Court has delivered its verdict in the case of the murder of J. Demba, which occurred in April 2022 in the Sapco neighborhood. After deliberation, the court found Mr. Demba guilty of murder and sentenced him to 15 years' imprisonment.
The trial, held on Monday, January 26, 2026, was marked by the defendant's constant denials. In court, Mr. Demba categorically denied the charges, claiming he was sound asleep at the time of the incident and had heard nothing, as he was alone in the house with his younger brother.
The victim's parents gave damning testimony. The father spoke of traditional rituals performed in Casamance that allegedly identified the accused as responsible for his brother's death. For her part, the mother explained that the position of the body, found hanging from a backyard window with its feet touching the ground, made the suicide theory highly unlikely.
The hanging of J. Demba immediately aroused suspicion, particularly because of the circumstances deemed troubling and the possibility of a staged event.
During his closing arguments, the public prosecutor nevertheless emphasized the weakness of the physical evidence. While the autopsy confirmed death by mechanical asphyxiation following hanging, the magistrate noted that no objective element formally linked the accused to the homicide. Relying primarily on the death certificate, he requested an acquittal based on reasonable doubt.
Despite these requests, the criminal chamber considered that the charges were sufficient to proceed to conviction, handing down a sentence of 15 years' imprisonment against Mr. Demba.
