Maïmouna Ndour Faye-Babacar Fall : La société civile dénonce une violation des libertés de presse et d’expression
In a press release issued on Wednesday, October 29, civil society organizations denounced the arrests of journalists Maïmouna Ndour Faye of 7TV and Babacar Fall of RFM, which they described as "practices" that hinder press freedom, freedom of expression, and the application of the right to information law. "Nothing justifies these heavy-handed arrests," they declared.
They indicated that the content of the interviews in question does not constitute any facts that would lead to a disturbance of public order or to an attack on state security.
They point the finger at the National Audiovisual Regulatory Council (CNRA) which, according to them, should have acted before the decision to cut off the signal was made by the administrative authority.
Civil society recalled that these arrests constitute a serious violation of the deprivation of liberty in the exercise of rights proclaimed in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, in Articles 18, 19 of this instrument, and in Article 8 of the Senegalese Constitution.
She calls on the Senegalese authorities to respect press freedom and also urges them to address the urgent economic needs in order to alleviate the suffering of the population. "National security and public order must not be misused to undermine freedom of expression."
