Assemblée nationale : les députés Ismaëla Diallo et Ousmane Diop réclament une loi criminalisant l’homosexualité
The parliamentary debate surrounding the issue of homosexuality has become more heated during recent exchanges in the National Assembly. The interventions of some parliamentarians signal a desire to toughen current legislation.
MP Ismaëla Diallo (Pastef) opened the debate by stating that "cases involving homosexuals have always existed, but no one has ever had the courage to pursue them." Praising what he called the "courage" of Prosecutor Saliou Dicko, he called on the Minister of Justice to provide him with full support in his legal proceedings.
For the parliamentarian, homosexuality constitutes an "anti-value," and the commitment made to voters, in his view, necessitates a stronger criminal response. "We haven't yet passed the new law, but we are already punishing offenders," he stated, advocating for a stricter application of existing provisions in the Penal Code.
Along the same lines, his colleague, Ousmane Diop, also a member of the majority, was categorical. He believes that the National Assembly must "now take a further step by adopting a law explicitly criminalizing homosexuality." According to him, this initiative would be perfectly in line with the promises made to the Senegalese people during the last elections.
