Pape Cheikh Diallo, Djiby Dramé et Cie : des interrogations sur leurs conditions de détention, un médecin se prononce
After their first night in detention, the fate of Pape Cheikh Diallo, singer Djiby Diallo, and their co-defendants has reignited the debate on the conditions of imprisonment for people living with HIV. Of the twelve people remanded in custody, at least six are reportedly HIV-positive, according to Les Échos.
No systematic isolation
When questioned anonymously by the same source, a doctor experienced in treating sick prisoners explained that, according to medical practices in prisons, people living with HIV are generally not isolated. They share the same cells as other inmates.
Continuity of care
Care is based on regular access to the infirmary for the administration of antiretroviral (ARV) treatments. This monitoring is carried out in strict compliance with medical confidentiality, in order to avoid any stigmatization.
However, the final decision regarding possible isolation rests with the prison administration, in consultation with the judge in charge of the case, concludes the newspaper's source.
