Plainte contre le maire Babacar Diop : Serigne Gaye Ndiéguene compte saisir le Procureur aujourd'hui
"I intend, starting today, Friday, January 9, 2026, to file a complaint with the Public Prosecutor against Mayor Babacar Diop for damage to public cultural heritage, abuse of authority, and mismanagement!"
The decision is from the coordinator of the movement of Dara masters (MODDAP) of the department of Thiès, Serigne Gaye Ndiéguene, grandson of Serigne Mouhamadou Barro Ndiéguene.
According to the religious leader, "Mayor Babacar Diop is now trying to justify his actions by claiming that he destroyed or erased the work and then restored it." He believes that such a claim unfortunately reveals a clear ignorance of the fundamental principles of fine arts and archaeology.
The marabout states that when it comes to artistic heritage, one does not destroy in order to restore, one does not ransack in order to preserve, one does not erase in order to transmit. The restoration of a work of art, he says, is based on universally recognized rules: "respect for authenticity, conservation of the original material and consolidation of what exists in order to restore the work, as far as possible, to its original appearance."
Any intervention must be minimal, reversible, and scientifically documented, emphasizes Serigne Gaye Ndiéguene. According to him, what has been done here constitutes not restoration, but the irreversible alteration of a cultural asset belonging to the community. He reiterates that a heritage work is neither an advertising billboard, nor a tool for political communication, nor a testing ground for personal experimentation.
"Cultural heritage does not belong to a mayor, whatever his title or mandate, it belongs to history, to collective memory and to future generations," says the coordinator of MODDAP/Department of Thiès.
Before concluding: we therefore persist in speaking of authenticity, respect, and expertise, where others speak of erasure, destruction, and post-hoc justification. Thiès deserves better than cultural amateurism; the city deserves respect for its soul.

Vous avez commis un acte criminel en détruisant ce joyau de Thiès. Ce tableau realisé par l'un des plus grands artistes du Sénégal, voire du monde, à son époque, vous avez osé le détruire. C'est comme si vous aviez ôté l'âme des thiessois. C'est très grave !
Et vous méritez d'être jugé et démis de vos fonctions de maire de la ville. Je suis du troisième âge et je suis très faché contre toi et beaucoup de thiessois le sont aussi. Moi je soutiens Mr Ndieguene qui va intenter un procès contre vous et vos conseillers. Yow, khamoulo Li nga yor. Ce tableau du Grand Pape Ibra Tall était l'emblème de chère ville de Thiès. Dommage !
