Présumés homosexuels à Mbour : Le parquet requiert jusqu’à 10 ans de prison
The public prosecutor has requested heavy sentences in the case of the alleged homosexuals tried at the Mbour High Court. If his request is followed, cook B. Thiam faces five years in prison, while O. Seck risks ten years' imprisonment under the new law.
In court, B. Thiam admitted to having had sexual relations with men, while claiming to have repented. For his part, O. Seck, although HIV-positive, rejected the accusations of homosexuality leveled against him. Both defendants, however, share the commonality of being people living with HIV.
B. Thiam, who was arrested first, accused the officers who apprehended him of pressuring him to name names. However, several of the people mentioned currently live abroad. O. Seck, for his part, maintains that he did not denounce anyone.
The defense strongly criticized the handling of the case. Attorney Kane maintained that neither his client nor his co-defendant had been caught in a compromising situation or committing an unnatural act. He also denounced the risk of false accusations, suggesting that someone could falsely accuse an adversary of being a former lover out of spite, without any concrete evidence.
While condemning homosexuality and the deliberate transmission of HIV, Mr. Kane emphasized the need to respect the rights of those being prosecuted. He also expressed regret over the public disclosure of the defendants' HIV status.
The verdict is scheduled for next Tuesday.
