Procès pour terrorisme : Le verdict est tombé pour Cheikh Alassane Sène
The Criminal Court of Dakar delivered its verdict this Friday, December 19, in the terrorism case targeting religious leader Cheikh Alassane Sène and his co-defendant Salif Hamady Ba. Following deliberations, the judge pronounced a complete acquittal of Cheikh Alassane Sène, clearing him of all charges against him.
The fate of his co-defendant, Salif Hamady Ba, is different. Tried in absentia, he was found guilty of making death threats. For these acts, the court sentenced him to three years in prison and a fine of 200,000 FCFA.
This case dates back to 2015, when the two men were arrested after sending a message deemed threatening to the Senegalese authorities. They were initially prosecuted on serious charges: criminal conspiracy, death threats, and acts of terrorism through intimidation. After spending thirteen months in pretrial detention, they were granted provisional release pending their trial.
At the hearing held on November 21, 2025, only the religious leader appeared in court. During the proceedings, the Public Prosecutor himself expressed serious doubts about the marabout's actual involvement in this criminal enterprise, going so far as to request his acquittal.
Regarding Salif Hamady Ba, the situation was more complex. While his defense argued for the charges to be reduced to threats without orders or conditions, the prosecution initially sought a harsh sentence of ten years' imprisonment for terrorist acts. The court ultimately opted for a lesser charge in handing down its sentence.
With this decision, Cheikh Alassane Sène's name is definitively removed from this legal case that has lasted a decade.
