Saisine du bâtonnier : Les avocats d’Abdou Nguer dénoncent une entrave aux droits de la défense
In an official letter dated February 20, 2026, the legal team representing columnist Abdou Nguer appealed to the President of the Senegalese Bar Association to contest the conditions of their client's trial. They denounced what they described as a flagrant violation of fundamental principles of due process during their client's hearing at the Dakar High Court.
The letter, signed by Maître Aboubacry Barro on behalf of his colleagues Iba Mar Diop, El Hadj Diouf and Alioune Badara Fall, relates the incidents that occurred in room 1, during the appearance of Abdou Nguer.
Prosecuted for spreading false news and placed under arrest warrant, the defendant allegedly saw his case treated in a "discriminatory and arbitrary" manner compared to other cases scheduled for that day.
The sticking point concerns the decision by the presiding judge, Mamadou Diouf, to postpone the case until March 20, 2026. The defense is protesting this one-month delay, given that the usual practice is to postpone similar cases for one week. Even more serious, the judge allegedly forbade the lawyers from filing a request for provisional release, a measure the defense considers a violation of human rights and the Code of Criminal Procedure.
Believing that this is a dangerous precedent for the balance of justice, the lawyers announce their intention to bring the case before the first president of the Supreme Court and that of the Court of Appeal of Dakar.
"The Union of Magistrates of Senegal and the Senegalese Human Rights Committee will also be notified," they inform.
