Scandale minier : 2,3 milliards FCFA blanchis par "ZEN" et "YEK"
ENTIFA scandal is rocking Senegal's mining sector. Investigations conducted by the National Financial Information Processing Unit (CENTIF) have uncovered a vast money laundering scheme involving two businessmen, identified by the initials ZEN and YEK, suspected of using their companies as a front to conceal funds derived from corruption.
Founded in 2023, Zen's company, which specializes in prospecting and mining, quickly attracted the attention of investigators. In November, it opened a bank account that, a month later, received a transfer of 2,300,000,000 CFA francs from a foreign entity.
In January 2024, the bank detected unusual financial movements of several transfers from ZEN's company to other companies belonging to the businessman ZEN himself. CENTIF, alerted, froze the execution of the 2.3 billion FCFA. At the same time, Mr. YEK, ZEN's partner, opened another bank account. He received a transfer of 475,000,000 FCFA and a check for 20,000,000 FCFA from the ZEN company, immediately redistributed to different beneficiaries between another natural person and a third-party company.
The analysis revealed attempts to fragment the funds, a classic money laundering technique consisting of dividing large amounts into several smaller transactions, in order to complicate traceability. The close transactional links between ZEN, YEK and the satellite companies, combined with financial flows without clear economic justification, reinforced CENTIF's suspicions.
The identified operations are comparable to corrupt practices, coupled with maneuvers aimed at laundering illicit funds through commercial structures. Faced with these serious and consistent elements, the CENTIF submitted a detailed report to the judicial authority, thus opening the way to potential criminal prosecutions for money laundering and corruption in the mining sector.
