«Seize pages pour sauver Sonko» : Mame Mbaye Niang réplique en… dix-sept pages
Tit for tat. Mame Mbaye Niang responded to the arguments presented by Ousmane Sonko before the Supreme Court, requesting a review of his lost case against him. Through his lawyers, the Prime Minister submitted a sixteen-page brief to the High Court. Following suit, the lawyers for Macky Sall's former minister presented a seventeen-page document.
According to Les Échos, which broke the story, they argue that "there is no unknown evidence and the report [from the General Inspectorate of Finance] mentioned by the plaintiff is questionable; this has led them to file a complaint against Ousmane Sonko, Cheikh Diba [Ministers of Finance and Budget] and Yassine Fall [Minister of Justice]."
Going further, Mame Mbaye Niang's lawyers believe that "the report does not cast serious doubt on Ousmane Sonko's guilt." Therefore, they ask "the Supreme Court, on procedural grounds, to declare the [opposing party's] request inadmissible, or at least to stay the proceedings until the complaint is finalized, and, on the merits, to dismiss the Attorney General's request" to review the Court of Appeal's decision convicting the Pastef leader.
Sonko was sentenced to six months suspended and ordered to pay 200 million CFA francs in damages. This sentence led to his ineligibility for the 2024 presidential election.
