After a month in pre-trial detention, commentator Abdou Nguer appeared before the Dakar urgent hearings court this Friday, charged with spreading false news. His arrest, ordered by the public prosecutor, followed critical remarks he made concerning an official statement about the death of student Abdoulaye Ba.
In court, the defendant firmly contested the charges against him. In his defense, he argued that he had based his comments on the autopsy report, presenting them as a matter of personal opinion.
In his closing arguments, the public prosecutor requested a one-year prison sentence, with six months to be served without suspension. The defense team, led by lawyers Ibamar Diop, Alioune Badara Fall, El Hadji Diouf, Aboubacry Barro, and Baba Diop, pleaded for a full acquittal.
At the end of the proceedings, the court found Abdou Nguer guilty of spreading false news and sentenced him to one month in prison. Having already spent a month in custody due to a postponement of his trial, Abdou Nguer was released immediately, as his sentence was considered fully served.
