Souleymane Teliko alerte sur l’effritement de l’idéal de justice

Former president of the Union of Magistrates of Senegal (UMS), Souleymane Teliko, gave a reflection on the state of justice in the contemporary world, on the occasion of his decoration in the National Order of Merit by the French ambassador to Senegal, Christine Fages.

The magistrate warned against what he considers one of the major perils of modern societies: "The erosion, or even the programmed death, of the ideal of justice."

This concern, he said, was fueled by current international events marked by the rise of power dynamics and the weakening of fundamental legal principles.

Souleymane Teliko denounced a global scene where "the will to power, the culture of impunity and warlike rhetoric" tend to supplant the cardinal principle of the preeminence of justice.

Faced with this drift, he insisted on the need to place justice at the heart of the social and political project. "Valuing justice is a way of recalling the central place it must occupy in the functioning of our society," he stressed, believing that this ideal constitutes the foundation of the "shared desire for a common life."

For the former president of the UMS, justice cannot be an abstract concept; it is a collective imperative, a condition for living together and for the common good. "The salvation of each of us depends on the demand for justice for all," he insisted.

The French ambassador to Senegal, Christine Fages, praised Souleymane Teliko's career and unwavering commitment to an independent judiciary. She emphasized that his recognition extends beyond his purely judicial functions.

"When I say that you are a magistrate, it is not only in view of the functions you have performed, but because you have never ceased to think, to defend and to promote a certain vision of justice in society," the diplomat said.

She also recalled the trust placed in her by her peers, who elected her to the presidency of the Union of Magistrates of Senegal between 2017 and 2021, and elected her twice to the High Council of the Judiciary, in 2016 and then in 2020.

This recognition, she said, was based on her unwavering commitment to the independence of the judiciary, an essential condition for judicial impartiality. "The judge is that indispensable third-party arbiter for any society," concluded Christine Fages.

She thus summarizes the ideal defended by Souleymane Teliko throughout his career as a free, impartial justice at the service of all.
