Diffusion de fausses nouvelles et injures contre des dignitaires mourides : Un professeur à la retraite écroué, procès prévu ce vendredi
The case illustrates an extreme sensitivity surrounding the memory of Mouride religious leaders. Papa Oumar Ndiaye, a retired French teacher, was arrested by officers from the Dakar research brigade and remanded in custody yesterday, Tuesday, by the public prosecutor. He is accused of spreading false news, public insults, and defamation.
According to the investigation report, his arrest followed the dissemination, on social media, of a video in which the man made remarks deemed outrageous towards Serigne Fallou Mbacké and Serigne Modou Bousso Dieng, two prominent figures in the Mouride community.
Through a team of lawyers including Khadim Kébé, the family of the two religious leaders filed a complaint with the prosecutor. Represented by Cheikhouna Mbacké, they assert that the statements made in the video constitute a serious falsification of history.
Papa Oumar Ndiaye attributes to Serigne Fallou Mbacké alleged actions linked to the colonial administration, even suggesting a purported collaboration aimed at delaying Senegal's independence. He also mentions the completion of the Great Mosque of Touba through bank financing that allegedly involved Mamadou Dia.
For the plaintiffs, these claims go far beyond the scope of an intellectual debate. They constitute a direct attack on the honor and memory of major religious figures in a brotherhood whose spiritual and social influence remains central in Senegal.

When questioned by investigators, Papa Oumar Ndiaye admitted to making the remarks, while denying that he was responsible for the video being posted on the Internet.
He explains that the recording took place in December 2025 in Diourbel, during a conference organized by a platform claiming to be the heir to Mamadou Dia's legacy. The former teacher asserts that he relied on sources he considers credible, namely memoirs, testimonies, and the work of historians.
He denied any intention of harming or provoking the Mouride community. He also suggested that a mistranslation of certain Wolof expressions had given his words an offensive connotation. Faced with the scale of the controversy, he claims to have received threats and has expressed his regret and offered his apologies.
Papa Oumar Ndiaye will be tried on Friday, January 30, 2026 before the Dakar court of flagrant offenses.
