Violences conjugales : Un togolais traîné à la barre par son épouse
A Togolese national, Mr. Abessi, appeared before the Thiès court for intentional assault and battery resulting in a temporary incapacity for work (ITT) of 5 days on his wife, also of Togolese nationality.
According to the plaintiff, the dispute stems from the presence of a woman she suspects of being her husband's mistress. She believes this woman is trying to break up their marriage and criticizes her husband for supporting her.
She claims that during an argument related to this situation, her husband assaulted and injured her while she was pregnant with their second child.
The defendant denied the allegations of violence. He explained that the woman in question was a former partner with whom he no longer had any contact.
He claims that his wife is prone to a fit of jealousy and that, on the night in question, she had tried to prevent him from leaving the house.
"She was preventing me from leaving, we had a fight and she got hurt. I didn't lay a hand on her," he told the court.
The public prosecutor has requested the application of the law.
The court found the defendant guilty of the charges against him. However, the judge granted him a suspended sentence, meaning that no penalty was imposed despite the guilty verdict.
