Genève : Ismaël Lô et Mahawa Kouyaté illuminent l'Alhambra pour la Journée de l’Afrique

Geneva's cultural scene resonated with the spirit of Pan-Africanism and diversity. To mark Africa Day and the Francophonie Spring Festival, the legendary Alhambra concert hall—a Swiss cultural heritage site—was packed for a truly exceptional concert. Organized by the ContinentPremier association, the driving force behind the renowned Gingembre Littéraire literary festival, in partnership with the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF), this historic evening celebrated the bonds of solidarity, sharing, and creativity that unite the Francophone world and the African continent.

Held under the high patronage of the President of the Republic of Senegal and the Secretary General of the Francophonie, the event featured the renowned Ismaël Lô as its headliner and guest of honor. The international music icon dazzled the audience with his warm voice, timeless rhythms, and profoundly humanist lyrics.

The highlight of this "giving and receiving" banquet was undoubtedly the heartfelt tribute paid to the immortal Mahawa Kouyaté. At 84, the worthy heir of Soundjoulou Cissokho, the late king of the kora, literally electrified the crowd during a unique and masterful duet with the "king of Senegalese folk." A moment of pure artistic communion that celebrated the transmission and richness of African musical heritage.

True to Geneva's role as a capital of dialogue, the venue also offered an eclectic lineup reflecting the rich diversity of the Francophone world. The audience was treated to performances by the Swiss-Senegalese artist Eva-Liza, whose music blends genres, the young, socially conscious Belgian singer Roza, and the Franco-British group Frànçois and the Atlas Mountains, renowned for their poetic pop sound.

This celebration of human fraternity and universal peace attracted a prestigious gathering of figures from the political, diplomatic, and medical spheres. Notable attendees included the Senegalese Minister of Health, Dr. Ibrahima Sy; the Director-General of the WHO, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus; Ambassador Henri Monceau of the OIF (International Organisation of La Francophonie); and the Deputy Director-General of the WTO. Numerous diplomats also participated in the event, such as Professor Kah, Ambassador of The Gambia; Mouhamed Ndongo, Minister-Counselor; and the wife of Ambassador Barry from the Senegalese mission, accompanied by high-ranking representatives from Western and African countries.

In front of a diverse and mixed Swiss audience, this synergy between ContinentPremier and the OIF demonstrated that beyond international tensions, culture and music remain the most powerful vectors for bringing societies closer together and sealing peace between peoples.
