The social climate at the Senegalese Radio and Television Broadcasting Corporation (RTS) has reached a breaking point. The SYNPICS and SYNPAP unions have taken a stand to denounce what they call "serious managerial drift" threatening the future of public broadcasting. Appealing to national and international public opinion, the workers condemn a management style characterized by authoritarian decisions and structural deficiencies.
Accusations of nepotism and conflicts of interest
At the heart of the protest, union members are pointing the finger at management practices they deem opaque. They are particularly critical of the awarding of the "CAN Village" contract to the Director General's brother, Thierno Niang, disregarding the technical and commercial departments of the broadcaster. According to the unions, this involvement of someone from outside the organization in activities that fall exclusively under the purview of RTS employees constitutes a "clear conflict of interest."
Furthermore, the appointment of a close associate, not an RTS employee, to the Supply and Logistics Department (DAL) is perceived as a maneuver to circumvent internal control bodies. According to the workers, these abuses are linked to a failed attempt to dissolve the company's internal regulatory bodies.
The anger of the agents is also based on a brutal deterioration of their working conditions and social gains since the arrival of the new Director General: suspension of the Company Agreement after only two months of application, withdrawal of the Tabaski advance, although guaranteed by a loan from the State, non-payment of allowances to agents requisitioned during the last legislative elections, failing management of the company's vehicle fleet.
The unions also criticize a lifestyle focused on "personal enjoyment" at the expense of public service missions. They cite as an example the Director General's trip to Morocco "at the taxpayer's expense" when national events, particularly the presidential tour in Casamance, demanded optimal media coverage.
Faced with what they consider an "arbitrary and illegal" ban on their press conference scheduled for Monday, December 29, 2025, at RTS headquarters, the unions are calling for a full mobilization. They are inviting all staff, including those at regional stations, to wear red armbands to express their disagreement.
Despite the intimidation attempts denounced, the workers maintain their determination to make their voices heard in order, they say, to prevent RTS from "sinking" under the weight of incompetence and contempt.
